How to Care for Synthetic Clip-In Extensions

Make Your Synthetic Hair Last Longer!

Now that you’ve learned how to install synthetic clip-in extensions, I have some tips and tricks on how to care for your synthetic clip-ins!

While synthetic hair extensions are much more affordable than human hair extensions, this usually means they won’t last as long as human hair. However, with the proper care techniques, you can certainly keep your synthetic clip-ins looking new for much longer! Read on and watch our video for a few key tips to keep your synthetic clip-in extensions good as new.

1. Proper Storage

The proper storage is going to really make a difference in the quality of synthetic clip-in extensions. I found a small zip-up case that I hang in my closet so they can stay protected. A drawer would work perfectly as well. Most importantly, you want to make sure the extensions can lay or hang flat so that they aren’t getting tangled and knotted. Don’t leave them half-hung over anything where they might bend because the shape can be altered.

2. Moisturize Your Hair

Just like with synthetic wigs, synthetic clip-in extensions need to be moisturized frequently. Getting into the habit of spraying a leave-in conditioner and/or a detangler on the clip-in extensions before putting them away will do wonders for your extensions and keep them soft for a lot longer.

3. Heat Styling

One part that some people struggle with synthetic extensions is wanting to curl and straighten them as often as you curl and straighten your own hair. You do NOT want to do this with your extensions. Since synthetic extensions are so affordable, you’re better off buying a second pack and keeping one curled and one straightened so you can switch off between styles without further damaging your extensions. Heat styling synthetic hair too often will damage the hair beyond repair. Not all extensions can be heat styled, so check the packaging for heat styling directions before taking any hot tools to the hair. If you do heat style your extensions, always use a heat protector and low heat (under 400°F is recommended).

4. Wash Your Extensions

After a handful of wears, my hair extensions started to feel a bit rough and scratchy at the ends, but once I washed them with the Awesome Synthetic Wig Shampoo it felt good as new, super silky and soft! I was very impressed. Using purified water will help make sure you don’t dry the hair out any further, and using a shampoo that is specifically formulated for synthetic hair is important as well to moisturize the hair without being too harsh. Make sure you are gentle with the hair. You don’t need to rub and twist them roughly to wash them; just let them soak and give them a rinse! The video below includes a demo of how to wash your clip-in extensions.
